How I Fought Fat After Forty, and Won (a Little Bit)

‘Fight Fat After 40’ is not the easiest diet book to follow, but it works:

Beginning weight: 212.8
Ending weight: 209.6

I am very pleased with this week’s diet and weight loss. Once I got to the basics of the ‘Fight Fat After 40‘ diet, it really wasn’t too bad.

I did get a bit fed up with the chicken breast dinners, although I came up with a few variations: lemon and garlic, lemon and tarragon, Thai style green curry, paprika and garlic, and a couple of versions of chickeny non starchy stew. Obviously to follow this diet in the long term, I would new to introduce more variety into the dinner options.

I’d need to find some new equivalents: perhaps other lean(ish) meat, Quorn, poached or grilled fish, stir fried tofu, etc. Dr Pamela Peeke (the author) also recommends beans and lentils, which I often use anyway.

I’ll never be able to bring myself to throw an egg yolk away, but as long as I can remember to avoid the starchy foods after 5pm, I think the dinners should mostly be manageable.

So it’s goodbye to the frozen pizzas, pastas, potatoes and rice in the evenings… 🙁

But I did appreciate being able to eat more bread and cereals in the daytime (the All-Bran featured most days, with low fat or almond milk and banana slices).

For some reason, I also found myself able to eat a lot more fruit than usual. I don’t usually like fruit much, but perhaps it helped that my toddler seemed to love it all: a satsuma or banana shared with a toddler just seems cheerier.

And the kids’ packed lunch apples were ok chopped up with plain yogurt or eaten in the car with some string cheese.

I even bought some strawberries this week to have with the yogurt, as they’re my middle son’s favourite.

Suddenly over 40? Here’s your Diet!

Do you ever feel like it was just the other day you were 25, and then suddenly you were, well, older?

I think the new Doctor Who could relate.

Suddenly he’s awkward with Clara – not only a lot older since regenerating, but tactless and impatient too. It’s a big change from the last two ‘boyfriend Doctors’, and hooray for that.

And just like the Doctor, I sometimes wonder where those extra years came from…

…And how I keep taking much younger people (ok, the kids) on fun and educational adventures they don’t always appreciate as much as I’d like them to 😉

…And how much bigger my car must be on the inside, to hold all the things they leave in it.

…And how much nicer it would be to see the TARDIS on the driveway instead of the Toyota…

Still, there are some advantages. Like, my little ‘companions’ are much cuter and more fun than his 🙂

But back in reality, the Doctor doesn’t seem to have put on the extra pounds that I have from those years, so I’ll be the one that’s doing this week’s diet for stressed older women: ‘Fight Fat After 40‘.

I know: women? But couldn’t The Doctor be a woman some day?

To be fair, as an episode storyline, ‘Fighting Fat’ with any Doctor (over 40 or otherwise) probably wouldn’t be up there with Genesis of the Daleks or Blink. Or Silence in the Library. Or the one with the Adipose babies 🙂

Still Not Fighting Fat After Forty

I have a confession to make: I’ve been stuck on the ‘PBS Diet‘ for two weeks now, and all because I can’t read a book. Specifically, I can’t read ‘Fight Fat After Forty‘, which was meant to be my next diet, starting right after my birthday and all…

Every single page, and I’ve read over a hundred of them now, is packed with interesting biological information, useful graphs, and reminders of how overscheduled, rushed and stressed women in their forties are, why this is bad, and how much harder it becomes to lose weight as we get older and our metabolism decreases. Ok, I believe you, I’ve noticed it myself, and I had great hopes for this diet, so please, please, get to the point!

It’s typical for a diet book to have a couple of chapters of case stories of people who struggled, tried out whatever the fantastic new formula is, and then – wow, it really worked, this diet did exactly what you said it would, Hooray! And then there’s the chapter that’s basically the collection of lists, timings, amounts, combinations, or whatever it is you’re really paying for.

Then there are usually a couple more chapters of being encouraging, and finally, ha ha, the ‘maintenance regime’ – because this isn’t a diet, after all, we’ve all tried diets, no, THIS is a way of life, and such an amazing way of life you’ll wonder why you ever thought you liked chocolate cake. Or reality.

So, being as familiar with diet books as I am, I have to wonder why and how the exceptionally busy, overscheduled and stressed target audience of ‘Fight Fat After Forty‘ are meant to pick out all the instructions that are scattered throughout the entire length of this densely fact-packed 300 page book. The person who had this book before me made a truly valiant effort, with annotations, underlines and asterisks on every page, but I have to wonder, even so, if she ever figured it out either: I’m sorry, Dr Pamela Peeke, I really want to try your diet, but I need a cheat sheet!

I’ll be back with more on this later, as soon as I’ve figured it out.
