Like the crew of the Starship Voyager, I have a long, long journey ahead of me... So my first week's diet challenges are inspired by Captain Kathryn Janeway.

Captain Janeway is my personal favourite of the Star Trek captains, and still one of the greatest female leaders I've seen on TV.

Join me - we're going to need a LOT of good coffee!

The Voyager Back Story:

Captain Janeway is the brave and adventurous captain who makes the difficult moral choice to save the people of an alien planet, leaving her own ship and the Maquis rebels they were chasing stranded in the Delta Quadrant, 75 years' journey from home.

Despite their outrage, she manages to keep her command and pull both crews together into one functioning Starfleet crew with a positive attitude to the long journey home.

Along with her leadership qualities, Captain Janeway is a terrible cook. She destroys her pot roasts at least twice, once for Commander Chakotay (who she so tragically loses to Seven of Nine), and once for former crew member Lyndsay Ballard (in 'Ashes to Ashes'):

JANEWAY: Oh, damn! Come in. Formal dress wasn't required, Ensign.
BALLARD: Well, I just, I figured, dinner with the Captain.
JANEWAY: I'd hardly call this dinner. My replicator decided to liquefy the pot roast.
BALLARD: It looks fine to me.
JANEWAY: Stop trying to get on my good side and grab a slice of bread. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I hope you don't mind.
BALLARD: Not at all. I lived on them at the Academy.
JANEWAY: So, how was your first day back on the job?
BALLARD: Pretty good, I think. Lieutenant Torres called my work competent.
JANEWAY: Trust me, that's high praise coming from B'Elanna. Commander Tuvok finished his analysis of your shuttle and presented me with thirty seven different ways of repelling a Kobali attack.
BALLARD: Did he include your pot roast? I'm sorry. I didn't mean. I can't believe I just said that. "

She also drinks a lot of black coffee, almost non-stop.

So, to diet like Captain Janeway this week we are going to drink black coffee and be terrible cooks! We'll cook, or at least season, as much of our food as we can, really badly. And then we'll drink coffee instead. Get some good stuff in 🙂

Why?

Diet like Captain Janeway? Coffee! Black!This week we are focusing on appetite and portion control, which is a great start to any weight loss programme. And what better way than by inventing creative ways to make your food less appetising?

The black coffee also helps to reduce hunger and increase fullness without adding calories, according to recent research (see link below).

Non-coffee drinkers, there was a period when Captain Janeway switched from coffee to tea, so you could try that instead, as long as you don't add milk or sugar.

Don't go too far with the coffee though: if it starts affecting your sleep then that's too much and it's counter productive.

Personally, I am switching over to tea by mid afternoon, then fizzy water, and chamomile tea last thing, with water in between as coffee makes me thirsty.

Finally, since most of us have other reasons for overeating than because we don't know what's good for us, here are our challenges to keep us distracted from those reasons this week:

 

This Week's Challenges:

Captain Janeway is a strong, decisive and morally courageous leader, and somehow, 75 years from home, always looks smartly dressed, well groomed and respectable. Even when her hair gets messed up in the first crash, it's perfectly rearranged by the time she gets to Engineering 😉

And above all, she is a figure of authority, to be respected. Like us, right?

So this is a great week to work on confidence, authority, grooming, professional dress, assertiveness and all that good captainly stuff.

Here are some ways we can do that this week:

  • Walk briskly and confidently. Stand up tall, hold your head up and your stomach in. Even if you're just picking up toys, stride from room to room commandingly. Because this is our ship and we are in charge, right?!
     
  • Be assertive and confident - fake it till you make it, as they say. This is a great week to make all those calls you've been putting off. Just me? Bleurgh.
     
  • Polish your shoes and iron your clothes. On a spaceship...
     
  • Give yourself a grooming maintenance check, whatever that means to you: think neat and tidy and respectable. Get a haircut or something 🙂
     
  • Wear higher heels to look more well dressed and authoritative. But you have to be striding commandingly, remember!
